What each part of the CELPIP Listening test asks you to do

Part 1: Listening to Problem Solving
You hear a man and a woman work through a problem in three short sections, usually a customer and someone helping them. Questions follow each section, 8 in total. Each question is spoken once, only the four options appear on screen, and you have 30 seconds to choose. Some options are pictures. About 8 minutes.
Part 2: Listening to a Daily Life Conversation
You hear one everyday conversation of about 1.5 to 2 minutes between friends, neighbours or coworkers, then 5 questions, each spoken once with four options on screen and 30 seconds to choose. The questions ask about reasons, feelings and what is probably true, not only about stated facts. About 5 minutes.
Part 3: Listening for Information
You hear one conversation of about 2 to 2.5 minutes in which an expert or experienced person answers questions and gives advice. It is dense with reasons, conditions and corrections. 6 questions follow, each spoken once with four options on screen and 30 seconds to choose. About 6 minutes.
Part 4: Listening to a News Item
You hear one news report of about 1.5 minutes. Then 5 incomplete statements appear together, and you finish each one from a drop-down menu. The statements stay hidden until the report ends, so your notes are all you have. About 5 minutes.
Part 5: Listening to a Discussion
Three people talk through a decision for about 2 minutes, then 8 questions appear together with drop-down menus. On the official test this part is a video. Here you get the audio, and a panel shows who is speaking. The questions name the speakers, so you need to know who wants what, who objects and who changes their mind. About 9 minutes.
Part 6: Listening to Viewpoints
You hear the longest clip of the test, a report of about 3 minutes in which one speaker describes a community issue and relays the views of several named people. 6 incomplete statements follow, each finished from a drop-down menu. Most of them ask what a named person believes, or where two people agree or differ. About 8 minutes.

Common questions about CELPIP listening practice

How many questions are in the CELPIP Listening test?

This practice test has 38 questions in six parts: 8, 5, 6, 5, 8 and 6. The official Listening test follows the same six parts and takes 46 to 55 minutes. The length varies because a sitting can include unscored questions that are being tried out, and they look the same as the scored ones.

How is the CELPIP Listening test scored?

Each correct answer is worth one point. There is no penalty for a wrong answer, and a blank counts the same as a wrong one, so it is always worth answering. Your number of correct answers is then converted to a CELPIP level from M to 12, and the conversion is adjusted for the difficulty of each test form.

How many correct answers do I need for CELPIP 9 in listening?

On the official example chart, level 9 is roughly 33 to 35 correct out of 38, level 8 is roughly 30 to 33 and level 7 is roughly 27 to 31. The ranges overlap and the chart is approximate, because the score each level needs shifts with the difficulty of the test form.

Can I replay the audio on the CELPIP Listening test?

No. On the official test every clip plays once and you cannot pause or go back, and this practice test does the same while you are answering. After you finish a part, you can replay each clip as often as you like and read its transcript.

Does this practice test work like the official test?

Yes, the flow is modelled on it. Each clip plays once. In Parts 1 to 3 every question is spoken once, you see only the answer choices, and you have 30 seconds. In Parts 4 to 6 all the questions appear together after the clip, with drop-down menus and one time limit for the set. You move forward with Next and cannot go back. One difference: Part 5 is a video on the official test, and here it is audio with a panel that shows who is speaking.

Are these real CELPIP test questions?

No. They are original practice questions and recordings made in the style of the six parts of the CELPIP Listening test. They are not official test questions and they will not appear on your test.

Do I need an account, and is it free?

It is free and there is no account. Your answers are saved only in your browser, so you can close the page and pick up where you left off on the same device.

Is this an official CELPIP site?

No. This is an independent practice site. It is not affiliated with CELPIP, Paragon Testing Enterprises or IRCC. The score estimate is a guide for practice, not an official result.
